Cellular operators and their market share in India

There has been continuous growth in the subscriber base ever since mobile telephony came into existence .i.e in 1995. Initially metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai were granted the license by government to launch cellular services. Later licenses were given to 19 more telecom circles. In cellular technology location of networks are classified as circles. Number of subscribers is growing with the increase in circles supported by various cellular operators. Avg of 10 – 12million were added each month in 2008. Today as per TRAI March 2009 reports 15.64 million mobile subscribers have been added compare to 13.82 wireless subscriber in Feb 2009. The total wireless subscribers in India is over 391 million (TRAI report : march 2009). This includes GSM , CDMA, WLL(F) users. This explains the significant growth in mobile users in India, which in turn opens doors for mobile VAS service providers to provide innovative and new product and services.

There are mainly 12 cellular operators and 28 circles in India. Some of the operators provide only GSM network, some only CDMA newtork and few of them provide both GSM and CDMA network. Table below illustrates the technology supported and circle wise details of cellular operators in India.

Indian operators and their market Share

The graph below explains the market share of Indian mobile operators. It can be noticed that Bharti Airtel leads the race in subscribe base followed by Reliance telecom. Third is the race is Vodafone Essar.

1.6 billion population in India. Service providers find great potential in tapping the Indian market for mobile services. In turn mobile users are interested in exploring various mobile services. Last year i.e. March 2008 , number of mobile subscribers was 260 million. It can be noted that there has been tremendous growth in subscriber base, hence adding immense revenues for service providers in India.

    Does Spice Telecom still exist, i think it has been taken over by Idea. May be i could be wrong please clarify.

      Hi Ali,
      Yes, you are right Idea has bought over Spice telecom as a company and taken modi’s 40.8% stake in spice telecom .Even though the management might be the same for both….but it looks like they want to keep it still seperate brand names (still exists as of now). Even government oganizations are listing them as seperate subscriber base as of now. Lets see what happens in near future.
